Does a Good Mattress Matter?

This seems like a simple question, but it’s an important one to ask. Does getting a good mattress actually change anything? Is it just a luxury item or a medical necessity? Are mattress people just trying to steal your money when they push high-end mattresses or are they giving you life-changing advice?

Well, since I am one of those mattress people, I don’t expect you to take my word for it, but I’ll tell you my story anyway. I’ll also show you customer reviews detailing what happened when they finally upgraded to nice mattresses. In short, people woke up with less pain and more energy. And if you still don’t believe me, I’ll even provide some scientific studies that back this up.

My story

My first good night’s sleep that I ever remember didn’t happen until 2008 (when I was 25 years old). Growing up, I always had cheap springy mattresses. I had a twin size bunk bed as a little kid, and then a full size cheap, springy mattress from age 8 to age 23.  When I got my own place at 23, my grandmother bought me a brand new mattress. It was so much better than my other mattress. It had a pillowtop so I couldn’t feel the springs like I could in my old one, but it was still firm. I mean like concrete. She thought (and so did I at the time), that firmer = better.

But I didn’t really notice any difference in how I slept.

I started selling mattresses two years later, and learned about comfort and support. I learned that you need to be properly supported, but you also don’t want to feel any pressure. I didn’t realize how bad my brand new mattress was until I learned all of this stuff in training. However, I didn’t know exactly what that meant for me. How was my mattress impacting my health?

Even though my mattress was only 2 years old at this point, I decided to take advantage of my employee discount and buy a new one. It was a memory foam and latex mattress with a wool cover. It had a completely different feel than I was used to, but after spending a lot of time in the showroom on it, I decided to go for it.

Until the night after it was delivered, I always assumed I was just a light sleeper. The slightest disturbance used to wake me up at night, and I would often toss and turn. That night, I closed my eyes at night and the next time I recall opening them was 8 hours later, just before my alarm went off, and I thought to myself “WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!” I had never experienced anything like that. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but I am being literal. It was the first good night’s sleep I ever remember having. I woke up feeling well-rested and ready to get out of bed. Now, I feel like that every day and a lot of the novelty went away.

I hear that same story over and over again. Recently, a coworker of mine upgraded her 20 year old springy mattress for a Serta iComfort mattress, and she was describing to me the exact same feeling of waking up feeling refreshed. That’s not just something mattress salespeople say as a catch phrase. There actually is a difference in how you feel when you wake up.

My wife’s story

My wife generally has no problem falling asleep, and she had no trouble sleeping on her old, cheap, springy mattress. When she met me 4 years ago, I was appalled by the state of her mattress, but she insisted it was fine. I convinced her to buy a new mattress and got her my employee discount. She ended up with a Stearns and Foster pillowtop (that’s since been discontinued), and she said she liked it better. But, that’s not the best part of the story.

Up until that point, she had back issues, and had been going to the chiropractor once a week for years. Walking too long often gave her problems, and there were days where she simply couldn’t go out because she was in too much pain. The chiropractor appointment would help for a few days, and then the pain would return.

About a month after getting her new mattress, she stopped going to the chiropractor because her back wasn’t bothering her anymore. It’s been 5 years now, and her back pain is completely gone, despite no longer going to the chiropractor. I don’t have any proof that the mattress is what caused her back pain to go away, but it’s one heck of a coincidence otherwise.

Customer reviews

Enough about me. I’m just trying to sell you a mattress, right? Well, listen to these customer reviews.

Here are some reviews of Leesa, which is a luxury direct-to-consumer mattress. I’ve added emphasis where appropriate, otherwise the reviews are unaltered. (You can read my review of Leesa here.)

  • I have been sleeping on my Leesa mattress for a week now and my back pain has slowly dissipated. This mattress provides excellent support in the correct areas so that you are not achy when you wake up. My last mattress was so poor that my body had taught itself to wake up every hour or so to switch positions to ease the soreness. My new mattress is slowly reconditioning my body to stay asleep for longer intervals since there is no discomfort associated with using this mattress. In turn, I have had more energy during the day because of a better nights rest. I am very happy with this purchase. My wife loves it too!
  • I am very cautious with purchases and was very skeptical about all the positive reviews on this new mattress. I research everything anymore especially major purchases, and I rely heavily on people’s reviews. I was afraid these were handpicked. Well this one is real. I’m a 46 yr old man who lives in Columbus Ohio and has been feeling terrible for too long because I’ve been (barely) sleeping on a worn out mattress. Everything in my life was suffering from it…tired all the time, no energy, no sex drive, depressed etc. I had even been to the doctor for it. Finally it hit me… I think I need a new mattress. I never realized what a big difference a mattress can make in your life. I literally feel like a new person. I’m not trying to sell these mattresses, and I don’t have a lot of experience with any other high dollar mattresses, all I can say is I can’t believe what a difference this mattress has made in how I feel. It’s Amazing what getting some good sleep can do! Thx

Here are some reviews of Tempurpedic (in particular the Cloud Supreme which is one of my favorites from their lineup). It’s a lot more expensive than the others mentioned, but it is very high quality. (Reviews are from the Tempurpedic website).

  • I’ve had this bed for about 6 months now. I used to wake up with back pain every morning on my old mattress. That pain continued with this mattress for about two weeks and I was quite disappointed my pain did not disappear overnight. After about a month, I was talking about his back pain and I suddenly realized that I was no longer waking up in pain. It had just kinda went away slowly that I hardly noticed it until it clicked. It does sleep a little warm, but I turn the ceiling fan on and I don’t really notice it. My friend ended up getting this bed on my recommendation and he also loves it. Honestly, the only other downside to this bed is that when I’m not sleeping in it, I miss it.
  • I have fibromyalgia and chronic pain I hurt all over. I bought the tempur cloud supreme bed a year ago. this bed saved my life it is the only bed I can sleep on that doesn’t hurt me I am so thankful’
  • I had slept on a friend’s Tempur-Pedic bed while house sitting a few months ago, and I was hooked. I had tossed and turned ever since on my aging coil-spring mattress, and finally bit the bullet and purchased the Cloud Supreme model from a local retailer. After the first night, I already noticed a huge difference: I woke up in the same position, and with zero stiffness. Weirdly enough, I also woke up REFRESHED. To my new bed’s credit, I didn’t feel like I had to lay there and “wake up”, I was ready to go and had no back or hip stiffness. Fantastic bed!

So it’s not just me that feels this way about getting a good mattress. As these people will attest, it can literally change your life.

Scientific studies

I’m not just going to leave you with a bunch of anecdotes. Scientific studies have backed up the things I’ve said here. In the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, Jacobson et al say “Based on these data, it was concluded that, in this population, new bedding systems increased sleep quality and reduced back discomfort, factors that may be related to abatement of stress-related symptoms.”

A followup study was done in which they “prescribed” a specific foam mattress to patients based on sleeping position, and once again, they found “It was concluded that sleep surfaces are related to sleep discomfort and that is indeed possible to reduce pain and discomfort and to increase sleep quality in those with chronic back pain by replacing mattresses based on sleeping position.”

In conclusion, it’s worthwhile picking a good mattress. Don’t settle for whatever $299 queen set blowout deal is being offered by your local retailer, and don’t bother with the cheapest Chinese-made foam mattress that Amazon can send you.

Invest in your sleep and you will wake up feeling more refreshed, with more energy and less back pain. Thanks for reading.

  1. It’s good to know how to buy a new mattress. We want to get a new one because my wife has been complaining about back pain. We’ll be sure to look up enough customer reviews to get trustworthy feedback.

  2. enjoyed your story :) We recently owned a Leesa mattress, and me and my wife are very happy with our decision. Thanks fort his comprehensive guide.

  3. Thank you so much for bringing this to everyone’s attention! I agree. Getting a good mattress isn’t just for sleep, like most people think. It’s an investment towards your health and well-being but can also save you lots of money down the road in chiropractor visits!

  4. Your story sounds a little bit like mine. I grew up on cheap mattresses, but since I didn’t know any different I thought it was fine, like you. But then when I got married my wife educated me quickly. We’re probably going to get a new mattress soon, and I look forward to sampling the choices. Thanks for the post!

  5. Great post! Thanks for sharing this with us. I think you’re absolutely right: new bedding systems increase sleep quality. I’ve been thinking about getting a memory foam mattress because I’ve heard that it’s more comfortable, and some people have had luck with reducing their back pain because of it. I haven’t got it yet, but when I do, I’ll let you know how it is!

  6. Wow, I really enjoyed reading your story about you and your wife! I have never had a good night’s sleep. I have tossed and turned every night for as long as I can remember. My husband and I just moved in together so we are looking for a king size mattress for our home in Tallahassee, FL. After reading your story, I am hoping that there is some hope for me! I have had a lot of back problems as well so hopefully we can get a great mattress. Thanks for the advice and stories!

  7. Hello. I am in the process of purchasing a new mattress. Have a four year old S&F one that has been trouble pretty much since we bought it. Bought a 3 inch topper for it, but the discomfort has become too much to bear. I have read so many website reviews of mattresses but I don’t live near those mattress sellers that are usually rated pretty strongly. Given some other health and wellness issues, I could also not buy a mattress online without trying it out first. Has anyone ever heard of the Prana line at City Mattress? They are an all latex mattress. I am wondering if I need to make a move to an all memory foam or all latex mattress, instead of the traditional boxspring type of mattress. I have also read about the hybrid mattresses that are part traditional boxspring/part memory foam. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Take care.

  8. That’s a pretty remarkable story. I like how you added in the studies that showed that a good mattress can improve all parts of your health. I think you’re right about finding the right mattress for you. It seems like there are so many great technologies out there now that can really help you have a good night’s sleep.

  9. I’m getting married in a couple weeks and we are trying to figure out things that we need when we move in together. I was just thinking about using an old mattress that I had, but I’m now realizing how important it is to have a good mattress. You really made me understand how crucial it is to get a good nights sleep! I’ll have to look into this and see if I can find a new mattress for me and my fiance.
